Introduction to OB GYN-First Trimester

This course was created for general and vascular Sonographers who need additional training in pelvic and first trimester ultrasound. This course contains embryology, first trimester scanning technique, abnormal findings, twin gestation review and gynecological abnormalities.

Course Description

Course Objectives

1. Effectively perform a first trimester ultrasound exam
2. Correctly measure and calculate gestational age in the first trimester
3. Confirm viability
4. Acquire an M-mode tracing of the fetal heart
5. Identify fetal anomalies
6. Identify uterine, endometrial, cervical, and ovarian pathology
7. Effectively evaluate a twin gestation in the first trimester
8. Communicate in a culturally-sensitive manner to patients who refuse transvaginal ultrasounds and discuss available alternatives.

About the Instructor

Julie Gaston

BS, RDMS, RVT

Julie Gaston (BS, RDMS, RVT) graduated from McNeese State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Radiology. She received her ultrasound education at the Institute of Ultrasound Diagnostics. She has been in the field for 20 years and in that time has managed departments, traveled the country scanning, and started OnSite Ultrasound which was acquired by Mint Medical Education in 2012. She directed the ultrasound education department of Mint. There she created ultrasound educational lectures and videos. She led teams in the creation of application videos for equipment manufacturers including Philips, Zonare, and Mindray. She created custom courses for corporate clients and produced education videos for device manufacturers. She wrote blogs for social media and facilitated MMETV where professionals could share information. She lectured and led hands on scanning workshops.

While Julie teaches general and vascular ultrasound, her passion is in OB. She worked at the University of San Francisco Prenatal Diagnosis Center and has co-authored a text book entitled, “The Complete Guide to Ultrasound for Nurse Midwives.” She is passionate about advancing the use of ultrasound in medicine, responsibly. She has created courses for medical professionals that allows their clinical knowledge to merge with imaging knowledge.

Bill Shepherd

Ph.D., RVT, RDMS

Bill Shepherd has been in the field of ultrasound for over 30 years. He has a Ph.D. in embryology and is registered in vascular, abdominal, OB-GYN, and neuro-sonography. He was a scientist at the Institute for Cancer Research and an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics. Bill later taught ultrasound as a clinical instructor and as an assistant professor at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

He is a part-time sonographer and a visiting faculty member at the Jefferson Ultrasound Research and Educational Institute. Bill has written books about ultrasound, several research papers, and chapters in ultrasound textbooks. His interests lie in obstetric and vascular sonography as well as ultrasound physics.
