OB GYN Hands-On Workshop March 5, 2022 Monterey CA **FULL**

Hands On Ultrasound Training

We have combined hands-on scanning sessions with online lectures and hands-on scanning videos to provide a comprehensive approach to learning OB GYN ultrasound.

Students will receive immediate access to online lectures to watch at their convenience before the hands on session. These lectures include foundational information in ultrasound physics, anatomy, scanning technique, pathology and terminology. Access to these lectures will be for one year.

The hands on scanning session will take place at our Monterey, CA training center. All scanning sessions include first through third trimester patients. Transvaginal scanning on actual patients is included. We do have a phantom for practice but we feel that scanning on live patients provides the most benefit in learning the technique for endovaginal ultrasound. We cover the first trimester exam including CRL measurements, M-mode, uterine position, ovaries and adnexa. The second trimester exam review depends on class demand. Third trimester growth, biophysical, AFI, cervical length, and placenta location are included.

Course Objectives

  • Recognize basic ultrasound artifacts
  • Discover common pathology and limitations of ultrasound
  • Perform a basic non-gravid ultrasound exam
  • Identify the uterus, ovaries, endometrium and cervix
  • Identify an intrauterine pregnancy and measure the crown rump length
  • Acquire an M-mode tracing of the fetal heart
  • Perform a biophysical profile
  • Measure the biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length for growth assessment
  • Measure the amniotic fluid
  • Identify the cervix and placental location
  • Communicate in a culturally-sensitive manner to patients who refuse transvaginal ultrasounds and discuss available alternatives

To help support you after you leave our class, we have developed a new program called “Show Us Your Skills”

Simply text or email images (with patient information removed) and we can evaluate them with you. This is particularly helpful when you are practicing on your own. If you are struggling with technique, interpretation or even your machine, we can provide guidance. Please do not be shy about using this service. We love hearing from our students and look forward to interesting cases. We are still in touch with students that we taught years ago!

This service is included when you purchase one of our monthly hands-on workshop packages.

Information

What should I expect from this course?

You will receive a combination of online lectures and hands-on scanning instruction. The live workshop will consist of a full day of scanning live patients. This includes transvaginal scanning on patients in their first trimester, patients with an IUD, and non-gravid patients if needed. We also include live 2nd and 3rd trimester patients. There are only 3 other students in the room with you and the instructor. Don’t worry if you are new to scanning. The 12 hours of online lecture you receive beforehand will get you ready. Our instructors are uniquely suited to teach all skill levels.

Who is teaching the course?

Our courses are taught by high risk obstetric sonographers with over 20 years of experience. We have been teaching midwives and medical practitioners for over a decade. We understand that ultrasound is not your main job. We have developed a systematic approach to scanning that will give you confidence in your ability to perform limited OB GYN ultrasound exams.

Why is it only one day?

We used to do this course over a 2 days lecturing in the morning and scanning in the afternoon. We thought it would be more beneficial for practitioners to have access to the lecture material before the course and for a full year afterwards for support. We are now able to offer 12 hours of lecture and 8 hours of hands on scanning time. We have recorded scanning sessions available as well to reinforce what you learn in class.

What if I need additional support?

We are available to assist you before and after your class. You will have the direct phone number of your instructor and their email address. You can upload images to your student account for us to review, you can call us directly for support, and you can email us any questions you have. We understand that performing ultrasound is a lifelong learning process and we are here for you.

What if my colleagues want to join me?

If you have multiple colleagues that need training, please reach out to us directly for training options. If you have 4 people we can offer a custom course at our facility for the same price. We can also come to your facility and save you the travel cost of coming to us. Some people would rather learn on their own equipment and not travel but some people would rather us handle the details and take a trip to Monterey or Asheville!

Yes! We are proud to provide live patients at all stages of pregnancy. This includes transvaginal scanning in the first trimester. We also include IUD or non-gravid pelvic patients if the group is interested.
Yes! Our courses are small, which allows for customized instruction. Many practitioners arrive with little to no experience. This is an introductory course and we focus on the fundamentals of OB GYN ultrasound.
Of course! We teach all medical practitioners. We even taught a group of paramedics how to perform point of care ultrasound.
We used to do this class over a weekend. We would lecture in the morning and scan in the afternoon. Considering everyone’s busy schedule and time restraints for travel, we decided to put all the lecture online and then condense the workshop to hands-on scanning only. This allows practitioners to review lecture material at their own pace and review it after class. It also allows for a concentrated day of practical hands-on scanning.
We only allow 4 students per course. This allows for maximum individual instruction and hands-on scan time. In a typical day we have at least eight patients. This allows for 15 minutes of scan time per student with each patient. The repetition, scanning patient after patient, provides confidence in scanning technique and interpretation.
Of course! A full list of billing codes, protocols, scanning guidelines and interpretation guidelines are included in the course.
You will receive a Certificate of Completion when you finish this course. This comes with 12 AMA Category 1 CME
